When you are stressed, you can start to hear the siren song of ice cream, French fries, and potato chips. But tempting as it may be to reach these foods, there are better options that will really help you relieve anxiety and will not have a detrimental effect on your waistline. Here, Keri Gans, MS, RD, author of The Small Change Diet, shares her four go-to grocery eliminate stress.

Avocados
Avocados are rich in B vitamins (proven stress relievers) and monounsaturated fats and fiber, which help keep you full, says Gans. She recommends whipping up some homemade guacamole (but stick to the suggested two tablespoon serving size) and eat chips with black beans. Alternatively, you can also take only half of the fruit, add a squeeze of lemon on top and eat with a spoon. Since so creamy avocado, it can really satisfy cravings for ice cream, says Gans.

Milk chocolate
In the mood for something sweet? Go to this childhood favorite. “Chocolate milk has potassium, which helps to relieve muscle spasms, if you are trying to physical stressors,” says Gans. Just be sure to stick with the low fat version.

Oatmeal
This food full of fiber will keep you full and give you an instant lift to overcome stress. “Oatmeal helps produce serotonin, the feel-good chemical in our bodies,” says Gans. Use skim milk to make it (you’ll get more protein and calcium), and mix in almond butter for added fiber and protein.

Raspberries
Low calorie fruit is a great way to get your healthy dose of sugar. Raspberries in particular are full of antioxidants and anti-stress immune system-boosting vitamin C. If you want a bigger snack or breakfast, Gans suggests throwing fruit low fat or fat Greek yogurt.
