How To Have S3X, Even on Your Period

  • Before having s3x, spread a dark towel on the bed.
  • Use a latex condom so that some of the blood that gets on him can be easily “rolled off.”
  • Keep a warm, wet washcloth or towel nearby.
  • Try different positions. Lying on your back or side will be less messy than going at it on top.

Option 1: Try missionary with your legs hooked over his shoulders. It’s a fun, deep position, and it will keep the blood from flowing downward, preventing a mess.

Option 2: Hit the shower. Try sitting on top of him with your legs wrapped around his waist as he sits on the floor or letting him enter you from behind as you bend over and hold the side of the tub for support. Any mess will swirl straight down the drain.

Option 3: Put in a soft-formed “menstrual cup,” a s3x-friendly alternative to tampons and sanitary pads. Insert it around your cervix, where it collects blood rather than absorbs it, and leave it there during intercourse. Softcup is a good and safe option.

  • Most important, have fun but stay safe! The MensHealth.com survey revealed that 44 percent of men see period s3x as a great opportunity to forgo using a condom. But, Gottfried warns, you can still get pregnant while you think you’re on your period (some women ovulate late or within five days of bleeding, a phenomenon called breakthrough bleeding), and both partners can transmit and receive some STDs, including HIV and hepatitis. No matter what time of the month it is, a condom is your safest bet.
  • Still a little squeamish? Try to remember there’s nothing to feel embarrassed about. We get our periods. Men ejaculate. It’s a mess, but so what? The best s3x usually is.
